Whenever I think about my Mother and the good times we had together, the first thing that always comes to mind is the many trips we took with each other, both with the entire family and alone together. The Watson family has always been characterized by motion. We moved six times together: from Houston to England, from England to San Diego, from San Diego to England, from England to Pittsburgh, from Pittsburgh to Denver and from Denver to Houston. When we weren't traveling between these locations, we were often taking road trips to one unexpected destination or another.
These times together, including frequently leaving established relationships in one neighborhood for our many corporate moves, strengthened our family enormously. Throughout it all, Mom was always the constant moderator, source of stability, and companion to each of our family members. Mom always saw the positive in every situation and helped us to turn what could have been lives of disruptive change for growing children into lives of excitement and experiencing new frontiers; and throughout it all, she was always there.
I miss the moves, the family vacations, and the times Mom and I racked up thousands of miles together looking at colleges. But I know that as Mom continues her travels now in a different way, she will still always be there for us as our family journeys on.
