Living Tribute to Sarah M. Clark
Photo
Died: September 11, 2001
A sixth-grade teacher at Washington's Backus Middle School, 65-year-old Sarah M. Clark was one of three teachers escorting elementary school students on a National Geographic-sponsored field trip to the West Coast. Instead American Flight 77 was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, killing all aboard.

The Columbia, MD resident had planned to marry John M. Wesley on Dec. 22 in Baltimore. The two got engaged in April and originally planned to wait until next year for their wedding, but the death of two friends persuaded them to push up the date, Wesley said. "We said to each other, 'Why should we wait?'" he said.

Clark taught for 27 years. She is survived by her two grown children.
