John J. Wenckus, age 46 of Torrance, CA, and formerly of Waltham, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001, aboard American Airlines Flight No. 11, during the terrorist attack at New York's World Trade Center.
Born and raised in Waltham, a son of John J. and Joan E. (Besso) Wenckus of Waltham, he graduated from Waltham High School in 1973. He earned a bachelor of science degree in 1977 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he pursued a career with Hi-Shear Technologies of Torrance, CA, starting as an engineer and progressing to become the company's vice-president of operations. He left that position in 1997 to serve as vice-president and general manager at Lockhart Industries in Paramount, CA. He retired briefly in 1999 before starting another career as a tax consultant, partnering with Philip Califano of Califano Financial Group, San Pedro, CA.
Mr. Wenckus was an avid golfer. He especially enjoyed playing pool and watching sports programs.
Besides his parents, he leaves his brothers and sisters, Carol A. Hamill and her dear friend, Richard Murphy of Waltham, Lynne M. Patten and her husband, Richard, of Waltham, Lisa J. Maloney and her husband, Terrence, of Framingham, Brian P. Wenckus of Waltham, and Daniel P. Wenckus and his wife, Kathleen, of Natick; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial Mass will be offered Saturday, September 22, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Church, 133 School St., Waltham.
