We ask Godís continuing Blessings upon our family, as we mark the passing of Marie Ferrando on Oct. 16, 2006 at the age of 100 years, the much beloved Matriarch of our family. She was born Marie Filomena Nardecchia in New York City on March 26, 1906 and spent much of her childhood in the Westchester County environs. The eldest of nine siblings, four brothers and five sisters, she was called upon frequently to assist in their care during her early years. She became self-sufficient by her early 20ís, having secured employment at Charles of the Ritz, New York as a Cosmetologist. Several of her sisters eventually followed her in this profession.
Marie met Bill Ferrando in the 1930ís and they married in 1941. They had three children over the next five years, while residing in Manhattan. After WW II, in 1947, the family migrated to the Washington area following her husbandís business opportunity here, and settled in Arlington in 1949. As her children grew older Marie began to broaden her scope of activities. She periodically assisted her husband in the catering firm he eventually established, which flourished in Washington for many years.
Marie, ever seeking to deepen her Christian Life, first visited a Franciscan Church in New York and then the Monastery in Washington. She subsequently adopted the lay Franciscan vocation, and had been a professed Third Order member for 50 years. She also was active for some fifty years at St. Agnes Parish in Arlington. She sang in the Choir and was a member of Legion of Mary and various other Church ministries from her first years there, as time with her family would permit. In the early 1970ís, she became a founding member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Arlington area.
Following the death of her husband in 1993, Marie continued to live on her own for several years. She finally moved to Sunrise at Bluemont Park in Arlington, where she had resided for about 8 years. She is survived by her three children, Bill Ferrando and wife Ramona of Arlington, VA, Bob Ferrando and wife Laurel of Washington, DC, and Marisa Ferrando Murphy and husband Michael of Unionville, VA and daughter-in-law Diane Vickers of Washington, DC. She is survived also by six grandchildren: Dante Ferrando and wife Catherine, Dana Murphy, Erin Murphy Herman and husband Ken, Kevin Murphy and wife Alison, Lisa Ferrando Aziz, and Billy Ferrando. Finally, she is survived by six great-grandchildren: Madison Murphy, Lena and Jared Herman, Heaven Aziz, Chiara Ferrando, and Keely Ferrando.
May the Lord Jesus carry you to His Heart, as you have carried Him in yours! We will miss you.
